About Us
The Kansas Aviation Museum is housed in the historic first Wichita Airport terminal, built in 1935. The building served as Wichita’s airport from 1935-1954, when the building was turned over for use by the United States Air Force. In the 1980s, the Air Force no longer needed the building, so it sat vacant until a team of volunteers began fixing it up for use as a museum. The museum was founded in 1991, and houses a vast collection of both historic and modern aircraft, including a B-52 Bomber, KC-135 and biplanes from the 1920s and 1930s. The building is art deco style, and has been restored with meticulous care. We have a variety of exhibits to explore, including histories of local aircraft companies, our Rip Gooch Black Aviators Exhibit, our Women of Aviation Exhibits and our “Welcome to Wichita,” exhibit, which highlights the building’s time as the airport for Wichita. There’s always something new to discover at the Kansas Aviation Museum.
